Sioux City

We are back at our daughter's house in Sioux City for a little while. Friends to catch up with, some fixit projects and time to spend with family.

Mitchell, SD

Stopped at the Dakota Campground on the south edge of Mitchell. We had about 300 miles to reach home today, so we cut it in half and stopped here. Nice shady campground near the interstate.
This is a new statue at the I 90 rest area at Chamberlin overlooking the Missouri River.

Murdo, SD

We took a detour through the Badlands National Park yesterday on our way from Sturgis to Murdo. We stopped at a few places along the way to enjoy the beauty of the land.

I thought that it would be a quick trip through the park, but we stopped at a few places and along with losing an hour crossing into central time, we didn't get to our campground until 5:30. The only Mass in town here is at 6:00 Saturday night, so we parked on the campsite and hurried up the street to Mass. It was raining when we got back and then a storm came through and knocked out most of the power in the park. It came back on before we went to bed.
Today I walked over to the Pioneer Auto Show museum and spent a few hours there. Their collection is mostly automobiles, but they have a lot of other stuff too.

An elephant to greet you near the front door.

Anyone who watches American Pickers will recognize this van.

A car with a wooden body

I hadn't realized that the Case tractor company also made cars. A 1915 Case.

This car of Tom Mix's was interesting to me because we had visited his museum before.

You really start to feel old when you see something that you used to repair in a museum. A betamax VCR.

How about a three wheel stage coach built on a VW chassis?

I hadn't seen one of these before. An antique self-adjusting crescent wrench.

A taxidermy two headed calf.

One of my favorite cars, the 1937 Cord.

They even had a motorhome made in the early 20s.

I took this one for Brendan so he would know that he has a museum quality antique.

I guess if Case can make cars, Lamborghini can make tractors.

No comment needed on the next three pictures.

And last, a reminder of home.

The Black Hills

Wednesday we had an uneventful drive from Hardin, MT to  Sturgis, SD. There was a variety of changing landscapes along the way and a nice pull through campsite was waiting for us here. Thursday we headed out for a day of sightseeing in the north part of the Black Hills checking out Sturgis, Deadwood, Lead and Spearfish. Very scenic drive through the mountains between the towns with a lot of hills and curves. We stopped for a bit by this stream. Clear, cold water with a lot of wildflowers along the bank.

Forget-Me-Nots.

Not sure what the rest of them are.

An overlook at Bridal Veil Falls.

Janice decided to climb down the rock to the creek below.

We found the Ft Meade cemetery and walked around a little bit.

Today we wanted to tour the southern half of the hills. Driving down to Mt Rushmore we had our first glance at the monument.

At the check in gate the Jeep suddenly lost oil pressure but it came back when we got moving.

Always impressive.

.
As we headed back to the Jeep, it started to rain, so with the rain plus not being sure why the Jeep was acting up we headed back to the campground. Disappointed in the day. Tomorrow we pack up and head to Murdo, SD.

Laundry Day

Saturday was quiet day here for most of us. Son-in-law Dennis took some of the grandkids fishing for awhile. Angela and I put a stew in the crockpot for supper. We played some games and just hung out. We went to Mass Saturday night here in Hardin. Sunday our family from Bismarck packed up and headed home after we had lunch together so we are alone again. Monday was Janice's birthday and the day of the eclipse so we decided to stay here one more day for that. We watched the eclipse with a few of the other campers here by the laundry room and then we went out to lunch for her birthday at Pizza Hut. After lunch we drove down the the Yellowtail Dam and the Big Horn National Recreation Area.
On the south edge of Hardin we saw a train car parked with a sign on it so we stopped to check it out. According to this sign, it is one of two surviving cars of the Montana train that was sent to the New York World's Fair. We saw the other one last week in Wibaux, MT

Across the street from the train car was this interesting building.

Looking at the Yellowtail Dam from the parking lot.

The cliffs across the river from the visitor center.

The power plant at the bottom of the dam. Due to homeland security it is no longer possible for visitors to cross the dam of visit the power plant.

There is a second dam downstream from the big one to even out the flow on the river when the outflow from the main dam varies.

We took a 10 mile drive up and over the hills to get to the Ok-A-Beh marina above the dam.

On the way back we stopped to take this picture of the town of St Xavier for Xavier.

After this long day, we decided to stay one more night and not leave on Tuesday.  On Tuesday we got the laundry caught up and got everything ready to go the next day.
