Gulf Shores, AL

Today we drove to Gulf Shores, AL. We took hiway 90 along the gulf on the way over so it was a scenic drive with a lot of long bridges.

And the famous tunnel under part of the bay at Mobile

We had visited this area before when we were staying at Mobile so we had decided to stay on this side of the bay this time. Our RV park is located a few blocks from the beach in the busy area here. So far we like the rv park. We plan to be here until after Christmas. After we set up the motorhome, we joined 4 other couples for a visit across the street from our motorhome. Seems like a nice group of people and one of them has a dog that likes treats, so Janice has a friend.

Happy Thanksgiving

We had a quiet Thanksgiving here today, They had a Thanksgiving buffet over at the Casino, but we decided to stay home and fix our own. Janice put some pork chops and potatoes in the crock pot this morning and I made a pecan cobbler and some cheese biscuits. The weather here was about 70 degrees and sunny. Janice spotted this bald eagle in a tree by the motorhome today. He looked thankful that he wasn't a turkey.

This is our last night here, tomorrow we head over to Gulf Shores, AL.

Waveland, MS

Drove down here yesterday to one of our favorite stopping places, the Silver Slipper RV Park. We are parked just across the road from the beach and the gulf. We can watch the gulf out the windshield.

We headed into Waveland today for some much needed haircuts and afterwards stopped at our favorite restaurant here, Tony's Knock Knock Restaurant. Janice's favorite there is the Knock Knock oysters.

I had the fired shrimp.

And the oysters disappeared.

Later in the afternoon we went for a walk on the beach. There were a couple of dead crabs there.

And one live one!

The rv park is on the right and the casino is in the distance.

Vicksburg, MS

Stopped for today at the Ameristar Casino RV Park in Vicksburg, MS. Not doing the casino, but the RV park is close to the highway and a good place for a quick overnight stop. Large RV park, but the sites and streets are a little narrow and tight to turn into. Fixed Ruben sandwiches for supper and we are just hanging out in the motorhome.

A Lunch to Remember

We took a little drive around Little Rock after Mass today, keeping a eye out for a local restaurant for lunch. We try to avoid the chains when we can in order to sample the local specialities. We drove through the Little Rock National Cemetery which I hadn't realized was here. Quite a sobering visit.

Just around the corner we spotted the Ms. T's and Dora's house, which advertised down home cooking with a little bit of love. I knew right away where I wanted to have lunch.

A look at the menu confirmed that we had come to the right place.

Janice had the baked chicken and dressing, yams, corn, and white and brown beans, and I went for the ribs, purple hull peas & okra, and squash. Oh yeah, don't want to forget her pound cake and my sweet potato pie. I normally like my ice tea unsweet, but there it was not available here, so we went for the sweet tea which was homemade and delicious. All I can say is that the food greatly exceeded my high expectations. You never know when trying a new place, but we hit the jackpot here.

The young man in the picture was our waiter and did a fantastic job! Wished we lived closer, I would probable be there eating too often!

We are taking the afternoon off here and plan to head on south tomorrow.

On The Bike

Sunny, but windy and cool here in Little Rock today. I decided to take the bike for a spin this afternoon. There is a bike trail that starts here at the RV park and crosses the river on a bridge that has been converted to a bicycle/walking bridge. The center part of the bridge has been permanently raised and ramps built up to it. At the far end of the bridge is the Bill Clinton Presidential Library, and a trail on that side of the river. I rode across and down the other side of the river aways and back again.

Here is the bridge looking from the RV park. You can see the rebuilt trail going up to the lifted section.

They have a light show on three of the bridges here at night.

These bridges are the other direction from the trail bridge, the dark one is the interstate highway bridge and the other has a light show on it.

A couple of shots of the RV park from the trail bridge.

Rainy Day

Rain on and off most of today here. We just stayed inside most of the day and watched the campground comings and goings and caught up on some reading. Seeing pictures and reports of snow back in Sioux City. Definitely prefer rain.

Little Rock, AR

Well we finally got ourselves to leave our comfy rv park in Branson and head on south. We drove down to Little Rock, AR today and enjoyed the scenery on the way. Sorry about the picture quality, I was shooting on the go through the windshield. Stopped at a little cafe in Marshall, AR on the way down for lunch.

We are parked for the next few days in the Downtown Riverside RV Park which is actually downtown on the side of the river here in Little Rock. We had stayed here a couple of years ago and were happy with the park. Hope to get the bikes out for a ride while we are here. Beautiful weather here again today, ran the air conditioner for awhile.

Kicking Back

On Sunday we went to Mass in the morning. We said goodby to our friends who had to go home, and just relaxed the rest of the day. We were glad to have them for our tour guides while they were here and miss having them here. Today we needed to catch up on laundry, so Janice worked on that while I worked on a few things on the motorhome and relaxed. Deciding to extend our stay here for another day and leave on Wednesday seemed like a good idea to give us another down day before hitting the road so that is the plan for now. Our plan for the next week or so is coming together little by little. So far the weather has been great, so no urgency to move south quickly yet.

Shopping Day

We took it easy today, went to a couple of outlet malls with our friends for a few things and had lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Got home about 5 and then we got together with them for a couple of card games. This is a busy town on Saturdays! Glad to be home and not out in the traffic. Here are a few pictures of our campsite.
